RADON TESTING

Should you have your home tested for the presence of radon gas?

Per EPA Guidelines:

  1. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.  Check the South Carolina Map of Radon Zones. If your home is located in Zone 1 or Zone 2, it is highly recommended you have a radon test performed.  (As a home inspector serving the greater Upstate SC area (Zone 1/2 area), I recommend a radon test to all my clients.)  Order an Inspection today!

  2. Have a short-term test performed (2-4 day test). If your results are less than 4 pCi/L, you may want to test again sometime in the future. If your living patterns change and you begin occupying a lower level of your home, you should retest on that level.

  3. If your results are above 4 pCi/L, do a follow-up short-term test.

  4. If the follow-up short-term results are between 4 and 10 pCi/L, a long-term test should be done. This will show your average radon level.

  5. If the average of the short-term tests is above 10 pCi/L, you need to look into ways to reduce the radon in your home. If you follow up both short-term tests with a long-term test and the results are still higher than 4 pCi/L, you need to look into ways to reduce the radon in your home.
